Fortis Hospital Launches UP’s First Laser Treatment for Varicose Vein

Noida, August 9, 2008: As sedentary lifestyle and high stress levels have become a common feature of people’s lifestyle, serious health problems like Varicose Veins and Deep Vein Thrombosis(DVT) are on rise.
In wake of the increasing incidences of Varicose Veins, Fortis hospital Noida has introduced a latest state of art Laser Technique for curing the problem. Fortis, is the first hospital in Uttar Pradesh to launch Laser Treatment for curing Varicose Veins.
Laser Treatment is a gentle and quick solution to Varicose Veins as against the traditional Surgical procedure that is discomforting and painful. The key function of veins in the legs is to transport deoxygenated blood back to the heart. The valves located within the veins play an important role in transporting the blood. When these valves stop functioning properly, they disrupt the flow of blood to heart. This leads to collection of blood in the veins, causing them to enlarge. These are called Varicose Veins.

Varicose Veins cause unattractive enlarged blue or purple veins on the legs associated with swelling and severe pain in the legs. If left untreated for long, the patient might not be able to walk in the long run. Varicose Veins can even burst and can cause bleeding and wounds that might not heal ever.
The only treatment available for varicose veins is the
removal of the damaged vein.Compression stockings are only useful the early stages of the disease and help by reducing the swelling and pain but do not cure the disease. Till recently Varicose Veins used to be removed through Surgery by a technique called’ Stripping’. However, the drawback of this surgery is that it requires multiple incisions
and therefore leaves multiple scars. It causes discomfort and pain and requires longer hospital stay. Also it takes longer time for the patient to resume normal activities.
The Laser technique introduced by Fortis Hospital Noida, is a gentle and quick solution to varicose veins.In this technique, the laser fibe r is inserted into the affected vein and the affected vein is closed from inside by laser thermal energy. After treatment, the blood no longer flows through the enlarged veins and the accumulation of blood no longer occurs. The treated leg appears smooth and free from pain and swelling. DVT is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg.These clots / thrombus may partially or totally block the blood flow in the vein and cause sudden onset of severe pain and swelling in the legs. The clot, if not treated on time,can dislodge from their place and reach the lungs and can block the blood flow to the lungs. This is called Pulmonary embolism which can lead to sudden death.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- DVT is a blood clot that develops in the deep veins, usually in the lower leg.
- Theses clots ,if left untreated can travel to the lungs and block the blood flow to the lungs called Pulmonary embolism which can lead to sudden death.
- Early detection and treatment can avoid fatal complications.

Talking about Deep Vein Thrombosis, Dr.B.C. Sathya Narayan said, ”People of any age group and especially women are at a high risk of DVT. Past history or family history of DVT, immobility, obesity, recent surgery or an injury, cancer, contraceptive pills containing estrogen, hormone replacement therapy, long flight travel are some of the reasons causing DVT.”
“It is not possible to prevent a serious disease like DVT. However, preventive measures, early detection and treatment can help in avoiding serious life threatening complications.” If someone experiences sudden onset of severe pain or swelling in the legs, immediate medical advice should be taken.” Added Dr. B.C.Sathya Narayan.
