Gallbladder Stones: Pain, Discomfort, Colicky pain, or reflux by Dr Manish Joshi

admin Jan 08, 2024

Gallstones pose a prevalent health concern affecting a significant number of individuals. These stones, located in the gallbladder—an organ situated near the liver—can lead to considerable discomfort, particularly on the right side of the abdomen.

Experiencing pain, fever, or jaundice may indicate gallstone-related issues. Upon examination through ultrasound and liver function tests, a specialized gastroenterologist or surgical gastroenterologist may recommend either endoscopic or surgical laparoscopic/robotic interventions for gallbladder stones.

While some gallbladder stones are incidentally discovered during scans, a proactive approach is essential in symptomatic cases. If you've encountered pain, discomfort, colicky pain (pain that originates in the small or large intestine) or reflux due to gallstones, your healthcare professional may suggest a straightforward surgery to remove the gallbladder, preventing potential future issues.

Untreated gallbladder stones can lead to severe complications. Stones may travel down the common bile duct, causing jaundice. Furthermore, they can obstruct the pancreas duct, resulting in pancreatitis, requiring hospitalization, ICU care, and endoscopic interventions.

If gallbladder stones are detected and symptoms arise, consulting a local gastroenterologist or surgical gastroenterologist is crucial. Timely action, including the removal of the gallbladder, can avert major complications in the future.

Dr. Manish Joshi, signing off from Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Rd., providing valuable insights on gallbladder stones.
