Healthy Eating for Teenage Girls

admin Jun 26, 2024

Let's face it, being a teenager is tough! Between schoolwork, socialising, and figuring out who you are, there's a lot that gets on the plate. Amidst this journey of change, one crucial aspect that often gets overlooked is healthy eating habits. But, since a balanced diet is what ensures that you get all the nutrients that are necessary for your growth and development, they can be quite fundamental for your overall well-being.

So, what exactly does a “healthy meal” mean? Restrictive diets or bland foods? No! A healthy dietary habit is, in essence, all about fuelling your body with the right nutrients that keep you energised for an active lifestyle. Think of snacks and meals as power sources for everything that you do – from exams to after-school extra-curriculars.

  • Variety is Key: A balanced diet should be full of a diverse range of foods belonging to a diversity of food groups, like fruits and vegetables, whole grains such as brown rice or quinoa, lean sources of protein such as chicken or fish, healthy fats found in nuts and avocados, etc.
  • Power of Protein: As we all already know, proteins are essential when it comes to building and repairing tissues. Bonus? They also keep you feeling full for much longer. So, aim to include as many protein-rich foods in your diet as possible, like lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, etc.
  • Catch-Up with Carbs: Though carbs get quite the bad rap at times, they're actually your primary source of energy. Go for more complex carbohydrates that are found in whole gains over refined carbs though, especially if you’d prefer sustained energy that keeps you going throughout the day.
  • Water, Water, and Water: Be it before, during, or after your exercise, drink plenty of water throughout the day, not only for your overall health, but to boost your mood and metabolism as well.
  • Make Smart Choices: We all love indulging in occasional treats, and there’s nothing wrong with that! The key is to practice moderation and make smart choices, like when faced with a fried snack, go for a baked version instead.

By incorporating such tips into your routine, you can be well on your way to fuelling your body for a healthy and happy teenage life! But remember, eating right is a journey, not a destination. So, when there are days where you crave pizza or feel like skipping a vegetable serving, don't beat yourself up – just get back on track with your next meal.
