Simple Home Remedies for Diarrhea Relief

admin Jul 31, 2024

The diarrheas cases are usually mild, and some home remedies can assist in addressing them. The causes of diarrhea can be changes in diet, being on drugs or the infection of bacteria and viruses in your body. It leads to dehydration because of the necessary loss of body salts and electrolytes which are nutrients for our nerves cells as well as muscles all the time. Its direct effects include severe malnutrition, together with reduced growth in children, mainly affecting those living in low-income countries. But there are ways to reverse or stop its symptoms and ensure recovery before it goes to severity.

The Power of Hydration:

Water, Water Everywhere: Diarrhea leads to dehydration, making it crucial to replenish fluids. There are three main ways to hydrate yourself: with water, clear soup or oral rehydration solutions like Pedialyte.

Having diarrhea means you are losing salt. Sports drinks can replace these salts, or you can add just a tiny amount of sugar and salt to your water to make your own electrolyte solution, since they both contain sodium (an electrolyte).

The Soothing Power quartet:

This traditional quartet of ingredients: Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (BRAT) is both gentle on the stomach or your digestive system as a whole and packed with essential nutrients to life. Hence, they are recommended during episodes when one’s nutrition may be impaired by various reasons because of their low fiber content that makes them pass smoothly through intestines even in cases where there might have been loose bowel movements.

Herbal Friends

  • Chamomile Tea: This herbal drink is known for its calming properties and can ease cramps and soothe the lining of your stomach.
  • Ginger Tea: Add ginger; a natural anti-inflammatory, to this hot water drink to help reduce nausea and vomiting that come alongside diarrhea most times.
  • Peppermint Tea: Digests food faster and also reduces bloating and gas.

Embrace the Probiotics

  • Yogurt with Active Cultures: Probiotics are live bacteria which sustains good gut health. Yogurt that has live cultures can rectify the balance of good bacteria in your belly as well.
  • Kombucha: This fermented tea is another great source of probiotics.

Keep It Light and Simple

  • Bland Diet: Steer clear from greasy, fatty, spicy or acidic foods that could cause irritation to your digestive tract, eat bland easily digested foods as an alternative.
  • Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol: The two will further dehydrate you increasing the severity of diarrhea

Rest and Relaxation:

Relax Your Nerves; Give your body good sleep to heal after a stressful time. In addition, do not engage in activities that are difficult and have enough sleep.

When to See a doctor

Although this can be settled at home, it may require medical help if

  • Diarrhea persists for over 2 days.
  • You experience severe abdominal pain, fever, bodyache or blood in your stool.
  • You are unable to keep fluids down.
  • You are dehydrated.

Clostridium difficile Testing: Required for patients with recent antibiotic use or hospitalization.

Imaging: Not routinely ordered, but an abdominal CT may be needed for significant peritoneal signs.

Basic Lab Work: Includes complete blood count, basic metabolic panel, stimulating thyroid hormone, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, liver panel, and stool analysis.

Categorization: Diarrhea should be categorized as watery, fatty, or inflammatory based on history and physical exam.

Additional Testing: Specific to the suspected etiology once a probable diagnosis is determined.

The key is prevention:

Wash your hands: the best way to prevent bacteria and viruses that cause diarrhea form being spread is to wash your hands frequently using soap and water.

Cook food thoroughly: ensure that fresh meat and poultry products are cooked at the right temperature to kill harmful bacteria.
