Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy in Winter

Lungs are vital organs which helps in transfer of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide from the body. Lungs have mainly breathing tubes that are called windpipe (trachea) and bronchioles and filter channels sacs (alveoli) and all these are very sensitive structures prone to get damage or affected in adverse situations like infections/pollution/chemical exposures or diseases.

As lungs functions are mainly related to breathing hence the symptoms of lung disease can be coughing breathing difficulty sputum production blood in sputum and wheezing. So, if any person develops any of the symptoms, he should not delay visiting the doctor and get the diagnosis and accordingly right treatment.

To keep the lungs in better state few things can be recommended like

1. Smoking cessation: smoking is most harmful thing one can so as it may increase risk of several diseases like asthma cope emphysema and infact lung cancer. Infact if one has smoker in vicinity (passive smoking) or one smoking outside home but coming back to home (third hand smoke) can be equally harmful. Smoking cessation (cigarette/hukkah/ e cig) would be the best way forward to keep your lungs health

2. ⁠Breathing exercises:

To keep lungs in healthy state we must keep ourselves active and deep breathing exercises like yoga pranayama, anulom vilom are always helpful to keep the lungs in better inflated positions and hence the oxygenation. Generally, people would do spirometer and equipment-based exercises however in a normal situations and health it is not recommended as it has only several indications like lung collapse etc.

3 Pollution avoidance:

Air Pollution is now one of the greatest problems that we are facing.

People exposed to pollution have shown to be suffering from lungs diseases like asthma COPD lung cancer. Pollution can also cause even recurrent infections so using proper n95 mask and heap-filter based air purifier are very helpful and advocated of AQI more than 200

4. Avoid unproven home remedies:

People would do steaming regularly in a belief that I will benefit lungs but inhaling steam for prolonged period would rather be more harmful. Some people may put any material like Haldi/ or home gradient which may even precipitate the bronchitis also.

So, avoid overuse of steam inhalation

5. Avoid Self-medication:

People may be using self-medication like using nebulizers or antibiotics for minor infections in the body which immunity may be able to deal.

So, making infections more resistant and stronger. Avoid self-using antibiotics and always consult a doctor who would diagnose and write appropriate treatments

6. Regular habits:

Drinking water and keep proper hydration, eating fruits (anti-oxidants rich) eating food on time and doing regular exercises is always helpful.

Our lungs are fundamental to our health, providing the oxygen that fuels every cell in our body and removing carbon dioxide as a waste product. However, factors like pollution, smoking, infections, and even a sedentary lifestyle can compromise lung function over time. Fortunately, by adopting some essential habits, you can significantly enhance lung capacity, improve breathing efficiency, and maintain strong lung health. So, these are the ways by which one can remain healthy from lungs perspective and keep them in best state.
