admin Jul 11, 2024

Introduction

Since childhood, we have learned “Water is life..” but can someone fear water?

Yeah, that’s true! Certain people experience a phobia known as Aquaphobia—an extreme, irrational, as well as overwhelming fear of water. This phobia is highly individualized, as it differs significantly in how it manifests. It can encompass a fear of several distinct types and quantities of water and different actions one performs about water.

Have you ever come across the term Hydrophobia? So, what is the difference between Aquaphobia and Hydrophobia?

Hydrophobia refers to a fear of water related to a late-stage rabies infection. Individuals with Hydrophobia have muscle spasms when they hear, see, /taste water, whereas Aquaphobia refers to an extreme fear of water not linked to a physical condition or illness. Here, we are going to explore Aquaphobia in depth, comprising its predominant causes, triggers, symptoms, and treatments:

Although people of all age groups, backgrounds, as well as demographics can develop Aquaphobia, certain risk factors can raise the probability of someone developing a phobia of water.

But Who is at the Risk of Aquaphobia?

These can comprise

  • Having a prior traumatic, harmful, or scary experience involving water.
  • Having another related phobia.
  • Having a close family member, for instance, a parent or sibling, with Aquaphobia.
  • Being an intrinsically more anxious person.
  • Having a sensory processing disorder/sensory problem.
  • Having a substance use disorder, like an addiction to alcohol/drugs.

What are the Causes of Aquaphobia?

The most predominant causes of Aquaphobia are

A negative, traumatic, or scary experience involving water

The most predominant types of experiences that result in someone developing Aquaphobia generally involve feeling like one is going to drown, struggling to breathe, not being able to swim safely, or being caught in a strong current.

Negative depictions of water

This exposure can come from popular culture, for instance, a TV show/film. For example, watching films such as Titanic, in which people died by drowning, can cause you to develop a fear of bodies of water that develops into a fear of water itself.

Having an allergy to water

Aquagenic urticaria (AU) is generally characterized by rash or red, itchy hives following skin contact with water. One is more likely to develop Aquaphobia if his/her allergy is severe or if he/she was previously embarrassed following an allergic reaction.

What are Aquaphobia Symptoms?

Aquaphobia manifestations can range from mild to extreme. The most common symptoms are too much anxiety when around water as well as when thinking about water. Other symptoms comprise:

  • Dizziness or fainting.
  • Too much sweating.
  • Nausea.
  • Pale skin.
  • Panic attacks.
  • Prompt breathing and heart rate.
  • An intense feeling of terror.
  • Trembling, shaking, or tense muscles.
  • Difficulty sleeping.

What are Aquaphobia Triggers?

Aquaphobia triggers comprise seeing or thinking about water in:

  • Bathtubs, showers or sinks.
  • Water bodies like lakes, oceans, or rivers.
  • Drinks.
  • Fountains in gardens, malls, or parks.
  • Swimming pools.

How is Aquaphobia Treated?

Exposure therapy is one of the primary treatments for Aquaphobia. During this therapy, a person’s mental health provider exposes them to circumstances and imagery that may trigger the person’s symptoms. They gradually help a person manage their response.

During exposure therapy, one may progress through these steps:

Learn breathing and relaxation techniques to utilize prior to and during exposure.

  1. View images/videos of water.
  2. Gradually progress to viewing water in a bathtub, glass, or sink.
  3. Touch running water.
  4. Glance at or walk near a body of water or swimming pool.
  5. Ultimately, go inside a body of water or swimming pool.

What Other Therapies may be Utilized to Treat Aquaphobia?

Other therapies to overcome Aquaphobia comprise:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

This therapy helps people learn to change how they see and respond to situations and entities that trigger symptoms.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

This modified form of CBT teaches individuals how to live in the moment. It can help them cope with distress, maintain relationships with others, and regulate their emotions.

Hypnotherapy

Healthcare providers utilize guided relaxation techniques and focused attention to help people alter how they look at water.

Medicines

Anti-anxiety drugs, as well as antidepressants, may aid lessen aquaphobia symptoms.

Yoga, mindfulness, and meditation

Regular yoga practice can aid individuals in relaxing and reducing their stress. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) teaches individuals to relieve anxiety in the moment. Meditation can help people focus on their breathing to avert panic attacks.
