Dr Mahant completed his MBBS from Medical College, Shimla and did his MS in General Surgery as well as MCh in Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery from PGIMER, Chandigarh. Subsequently, he worked as faculty at Medical College, Shimla and PGIMER, Chandigarh and later at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow as an Additional Professor. After completing training in India, Dr Mahant has the distinction of working at some of the finest hospitals in the world, including in USA, Australia and New Zealand. In 1991, he was awarded a prestigious fellowship in cardiac surgery at UAB Alabama, USA (which is rated one of the best five hospitals for cardiac surgery in the world). Dr T S Mahant has performed over 50,000 open heart surgeries in his career spanning over 45+ years. He is among the pioneers of Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in India, and also has the distinction of performing various procedures for correction of complex cyanotic heart disease. His range includes complex corrective procedures for neonates with congenital defects to coronary revascularization in nonagenarians. He has successfully managed all kinds of catastrophes like dissecting aortic in aneurysms, re-do surgeries and valve replacement as well as repairs with equal ease. He performs multi-vessel bypass procedures on beating heart in patients with various comorbidities including acute myocardial infarction and ischemic heart failure. He is perhaps the first doctor in India to perform surgery for the ‘Blue Baby’ syndrome- he did his first such surgery in 1997. During his illustrious career, Dr Mahant has been honoured with many awards and felicitations, the latest being the Lifetime Achievement Award, which the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh handed over to Dr Mahant. He has also been honoured by the Rwanda High Commission for ‘Outstanding Humanitarian Service’. Other awards include ‘Himachal Rattan’, ‘International Man of the Year 2009’, ‘Best Research Paper Award’, ‘Paul Harris Fellow’ by the Rotary International among many others.
