MEDICAL ONCOLOGY
The primary objective of the Department of Medical Oncology is to offer comprehensive care in diagnosing and treating patients (both adults and children) with solid tumours and haematological malignancies. We are committed to offering compassionate care along with personalized treatment for all kinds of cancers and our multi-disciplinary Tumour Board recommends an individualized treatment plan for every patient based on the latest scientific and technological advancements. The renowned team of oncologists at our department has the latest knowledge, expertise and experience for treating any type or stage of cancer. In order to provide state-of-the-art, personalized patient care, we work closely with a talented and dedicated team of professionals comprising of physicians from other sub-specialty areas, surgeons, radiologists, behavioural scientists, nutritionists, palliative care professional and physiotherapists.

RADIATION ONCOLOGY
The Department offers radiation therapy in fewer high-dose treatments as compared to traditional therapy, which helps preserve healthy tissue. If delivered in a single sitting, it is called Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), as usually done in cases of Brain lesions. When SRS is used to treat body tumours, it's called Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT). At Fortis Cancer Institute (FCI) we have the region’s most advanced (LINAC) Linear Accelerator with VMAT. Coupled with IGRT, SRS, SRT & ART, the treatment ensures that only cancer cells are destroyed, and the surrounding healthy tissue are spared. This ensures minimal burns, side effects & shorter treatment span. Treatment is delivered with sub-mm accuracy. In addition, FCI has the conventional 3D and IMRT modalities, along with Siemens Biograph Truepoint with HD PET-CT. Combining benefits of both PET and CT, it has the ability to detect lesions as small as 1 mm, with minimal radiopharmaceutical dose.
Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): IGRT is the use of imaging during radiation therapy to improve the precision and accuracy of treatment delivery. IGRT is used to treat tumors in areas of the body that have involuntary movement, such as the lungs.
Volumetric Modulated Arc Radiotherapy (VMAT): VMAT is a new type of IMRT technique. The radiotherapy machine rotates around the patient during treatment. The machine continuously reshapes and changes the intensity of the radiation beam as it moves around the body. It is used to treat various tumours like Prostate, Brain tumours and gynaecological malignancies.
Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): IMRT is an advanced type of radiation therapy used to treat cancer and noncancerous tumors. IMRT uses advanced technology to manipulate photon beams of radiation to conform to the shape of a tumor and spare the normal tissue.
Apart from these We also offer Dendritic Cell Therapy (DCT), wherein the dendritic cells help the immune system recognize and attack abnormal cells, including cancer cells. -
SURGICAL ONCOLOGY
Surgical Oncology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and management of cancerous tumours using various surgical procedures. Our FCI boasts of an integrated health system comprising of highly-skilled surgeons with the most advanced technology to perform such operative procedures. A wide-variety of surgical procedures such as Open, Laparoscopic and Robotic-assisted Surgery, are conducted at FCI to treat cancers affecting the prostate, breast, head & neck, ovary & uterus, thyroid, pancreas, lungs, stomach, intestine, etc. -
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
Nuclear medicine is a special branch of radiology that uses radioactive materials to diagnose & treat cancer cells and shrink tumours. Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive materials caller radiotracers to detect an infection or a disease in the body. The radioactive material gets deposited in the tissue, the emitted radiation is detected through a radiation detector like Gamma Camera, which stores the digital signals produced in the form of imaging. -
ROBOTIC ONCOSURGERY
Over the last few decades’ cancer surgery has evolved tremendously especially more towards the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques like Laparoscopic and Robotic onco surgeries. These newer techniques are not only safer and have minimal side effects but are also play a huge role in organ preservation in cancer patients. In fact, robotic surgery is now considered as the God Standard for surgical treatment of prostate cancers and has vastly improved the outcomes. At FCI we have the world’s most advanced surgical robot – the Da Vinci Xi which is being used by our most experienced and skilled surgeons to perform cancer surgeries of prostate, breast, and other gynaecological cancers.
Benefits of robotic surgery for the patients include minimal scarring, lesser blood loss, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery. It is also very beneficial for the surgeon in terms of better visibility, control over movements with increased flexibility and ability to navigate through deeper tissues with higher precision. -
Head and neck cancer is the term used to describe a number of different malignant tumors that develop in or around the throat, larynx, nose, sinuses, and mouth. These cancers begin when healthy cells are replaced by cancerous cells and grow out of control forming a mass called a tumor.
With the advent of newer techniques like IMRT, IGRT, and Rapid-Arc, we can precisely treat the cancer cells and spare the normal tissues so that we can have good tumor control and very few side effects. We have VARIAN TRILOGY at our centre which is very well capable of treating with all of these latest techniques. The combination of high-end techniques and clinical expertise makes our centre as per the international standards.
