18-year-old State-level basketball player with dislocated knee successfully treated via reconstruction surgery at Fortis Escorts Faridabad
Faridabad, 28 November 2024: Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad successfully treated a 18-year-old teenager, who’s left knee had twisted and further got dislocated while playing basketball, due to which he was unable to fold his legs. The team of doctors led by Dr Ashok Dhar, Additional Director, Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad adopted a knee reconstruction surgery on the patient, who is a state-level player from Madhya Pradesh, and within next few months, he could play basketball again. The surgery was conducted in an hour, and he was discharged in 2 days in a stable condition.
Upon admission at Fortis Escorts Faridabad, the patient was in extreme pain, his left knee was unstable and had limited movement. An MRI and X-ray of his left knee were conducted, which revealed that his kneecap had got dislocated. The doctors then decided to adopt a minimally invasive surgical procedure MPFL method (a surgical procedure that uses a tissue graft to treat recurring kneecap dislocation and stabilize the knee) using tissues from his left hamstring to rejoin his kneecap. This method was adopted as it provides enhanced stability of the knees, effectively reducing the risk of recurrent dislocations and alleviating associated pain, which leads to improved knee function and a better quality of life. The procedure also employs minimally invasive techniques which results in faster recovery, less post-operative discomfort, and a quicker return to daily activities and sports.
Giving details of the case, Dr Ashok Dhar, Additional Director, Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “Basketball players are prone to high-impact movements and a sudden change in direction increases the risk of injuries to the soft tissues that stabilizes the knee. A tear can lead to instability, pain, and functional limitations. Here, MPFL reconstruction procedure plays a crucial role in keeping the kneecap aligned. Reconstructive surgery aims to restore the ligament’s function, enabling the player to return to high-level activity with reduced risk of re-injury. This procedure is crucial for maintaining performance and preventing long-term knee damage. Such reconstruction is surgically challenging due to the need for precise placement and alignment of tissues. It requires careful preoperative planning and accurate
identification of area to attach the tissues. The delicate nature surrounding soft tissues demands meticulous handling to avoid complications. Ensuring tissue placement and alignment is critical and even minor errors can lead to suboptimal outcomes. Continuous refinement of surgical skills and techniques help mitigate these difficulties and improve overall success rates. In this case, if the patient was not treated on time, there would have been recurrent dislocation of his kneecap and would have caused him arthritis.”
Yogendra Nath Awadhiya, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad said, “This was a very challenging case, considering the critical condition of the patient. The team of doctors led by Dr Ashok Dhar undertook the correct line of treatment and could save the patient from arthritis at such an early age. Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad is well-equipped with experienced clinicians and advanced technologies for accuracy in diagnosis and treatment, leading to quality patient outcomes.”
