6-month-old Infant Suffering from Renal Blockage Successfully treated via Laparoscopic Procedure at Fortis Escorts Faridabad
Faridabad, 6th November 2024: Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad successfully treated a 6-month-old infant suffering from Pelviureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction - a common condition that occurs when urine flow is restricted at the junction of the kidney's pelvis and ureter. The team of doctors led by Dr Anup Gulati, Director of Urology and Kidney transplant at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad treated the infant via a challenging laparoscopic surgery and the patient was discharged in a stable condition within xx days.
The infant’s condition was initially detected during a routine prenatal ultrasound, which revealed signs of obstruction while the baby was still in the womb. As the baby was small and the diameter of his stomach was too small to operate, his renal scan was done when the infant turned 5 months old. The renal scan revealed obstructed urine drainage in the right kidney and moderately impaired kidney function, due to Pelviureteric Junction obstruction hampering the urine drainage from the right kidney. Upon admission at the hospital, the infant underwent a Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that lasted for 1.5 hours.
Giving details of the case, Dr Anup Gulati, Director, Urology and Kidney Transplant at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “This was an especially challenging case considering there was limited intra-abdominal space for surgery owing to the small size of the abdomen. Also, the tissues in infants are very delicate and need to be deftly and gently handled with miniature surgical instruments. Thus, this surgery in the infant required utmost dexterity with exceptional laparoscopic reconstructive skills. PUJ obstruction can be congenital or acquired. In babies, it can cause antenatal hydronephrosis, which is swelling of the kidneys that can be detected on an ultrasound scan during pregnancy. It may not be diagnosed until after birth, or it might even be found in older children. If not treated on time, the obstruction can lead to loss of kidney.”
Yogendra Nath Awadhiya, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad said, “The surgery was complex considering the age and condition of the infant. However, the team of doctors led by Dr Anup Gulati meticulously handled the case and executed the surgery with great precision and care. Such cases require correct diagnostic approach and management strategies, and Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad is well-equipped to manage such challenging cases.”
