Experts at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana share essential first aid tips to manage breathing difficulties
Ludhiana, November 2024 – Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated with immense joy and enthusiasm across the country and is often marked by the bursting of firecrackers. This contributes to air pollution, which can trigger breathing difficulties for many individuals. To help manage these risks, experts from Fortis Hospital Ludhiana shared essential preventive measures and first aid tips for managing respiratory issues during this festive season.
Fireworks release various air pollutants, including particulate matter, sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). Dr Sushil Gupta, Additional Director - Pulmonology/Chest & Sleep Medicine, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana explained, “These pollutants can significantly impact the respiratory system, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions, like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The smoke and fine particles from fireworks can irritate the airways, causing difficulty in breathing, induce coughing and wheezing. Additionally, fine particulate matter can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially leading to long-term health complications.”
Tips for Managing Breathing Difficulties:
To assist individuals experiencing breathing difficulties during Diwali celebrations, Dr. Kaur recommends the following first aid measures:
- Move to a place with clean air: Immediately relocate the affected person to an area with fresh, unpolluted air. This could mean moving indoors or distancing them from the source of pollution. Avoid open windows or balconies
- Use a mask: Offer a mask or cloth to cover the person’s nose and mouth. This helps filter out some pollutants, making it easier for the person to breathe
- Use inhalers or medications: For individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma, having extra inhalers handy is a must. Assist them in using their prescribed inhalers or medications. Prompt action can prevent symptoms from escalating
- Stay calm and practise deep breathing: Anxiety can worsen breathing issues. Reassure the person and guide them to take slow, deep breaths. Deep breathing can help relax the airways, especially for patients of asthma
- Hydrate: Drink water. Staying hydrated can help thin mucus and ease breathing
- Assist with breathing techniques: If the person is struggling to breathe, make them sit, lean slightly forward, and rest their hands on their knees. This position can enhance airflow and ease breathing
Following Diwali celebrations, it’s crucial to monitor any persistent breathing difficulties. If symptoms persist, seek professional medical evaluation and treatment. Ensure indoor spaces are thoroughly cleaned and ventilated to remove residual pollutants for a healthier recovery. Additionally, encourage those with respiratory issues to practice respiratory exercises to enhance lung strength and capacity, promoting overall respiratory well-being.
