Jaipur, April, 2024: On World Health Day, observed globally on April 7th, Fortis Hospital Jaipur hosted a Basic Life Support (BLS) workshop and free health check-ups. Aimed at enhancing public awareness and preparedness in emergency medical situations, the workshop was conducted by Dr. Amit Kumar Singhal, Additional Director & Senior Consultant of Cardiology at Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from individuals eager to learn and contribute to creating a safer and more prepared community. The participants received comprehensive training on essential life-saving skills along with a brief session on Sudden Cardiac Deaths (SCD), where a person is most likely to die within an hour of the onset of symptoms. The attendees learned about the symptoms and were trained to handle such a situation till medical help arrived. The talk also included causes of SCDs, like genetic channelopathies (diseases that develop because of defects in ion channels caused by either genetic or acquired factors), cardiomyopathies (a disease of the heart muscle), alcohol consumption and obesity.
Dr. Amit Kumar Singhal, Additional Director and Senior Consultant of Cardiology at Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur, said, "Sudden Cardiac Deaths (SCD) are characterized by fatalities occurring within one hour of symptom onset in individuals who were previously in good health. Of late, we have seen a surge in such cases, even among the younger population. A lot of factors contribute to SCDs, like genetic channelopathies, cardiomyopathies, alcohol consumption and obesity. Preventing SCD is in our hands, in most cases, if we go for regular preventive health check-ups. Timely CPR administered following cardiac arrest can restore rhythm and prevent hypoxic brain injury. It's essential for everyone to be equipped with CPR knowledge to assist in such emergencies.”
