Male Infertility, a growing concern for Himachal Pradesh: Dr. Mehta

Fortis Bloom IVF Centre applied a latest technology of Time Lapse in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help the family of Charu and Dinesh Chopra* (Names changed to protect privacy) from Shimla conceive recently. The Chopras have been married for 12 years before they finally were able to conceive. They dubbed this tedious process of visiting three IVF centres in the region as a ‘long waiting game’ before visiting Fortis Bloom Centre.

IVF is an assisted method to reproduce by combining egg with sperm in a laboratory dish. Once the egg fertilizes and begins cell division for two to five days, the resulting embryo is then transferred into the women’s uterus where it will hopefully implant in the uterine lining and further develop.

Regarding cases of IVF, Dr Pooja Mehta of Fortis Bloom IVF Centre, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, said, “Due to our sedentary lifestyle, today almost 15% of all couples in India struggle to conceive naturally. However, with IVF, these couples can now avail this opportunity. However, many a times, the IVF may not work out smoothly as one desire it to be. When the Chopras came to us after three unsuccessful IVF, we counseled the couple and encouraged them to give IVF another shot following which they became pregnant.”

The treatment started with ovum pick-up and then freezing of the embryos with Vitrification. “We used latest Laser Hatching technology to transfer the frozen embryo. The Time Lapse technology, also known as Embryoscope, has a built-in camera that takes automated images of fertilized oocytes every hour. With the help of this technology, we can choose the best-growing healthier embryo for transfer,” Dr Mehta further added.
