Bathinda, June 19, 2024: The Scoliosis Division of the Orthopedics Spine Department at Fortis Hospital Mohali has transformed the lives of minor children suffering from Paediatric Spinal Deformities by performing rare and technically-challenging surgeries, the first-of-its-kind in the North Region.

Dr Deepak Joshi, Additional Director, Orthopedics Spine Department at Fortis Hospital Mohali, has treated several minor patients suffering from diseases such as kyphosis, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, congenital scoliosis and neuromuscular scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine and is most often diagnosed in adolescents. It usually is idiopathic, meaning occurring due to no specific cause.

In the first case, a 14-year-old boy from Bathinda was born with Congenital Hemivertebra (one side of his spine was not growing), due to which the young patient had developed a severe curve in his midback, forcing him to hunch forward and tilt sideways. A delay in treatment would have led to a grotesque deformity, affecting the child’s growth, vital organs and self-esteem.

The team of doctors led by Dr Joshi successfully conducted a rare procedure of ‘Hemi-Vertebra Excision and Kyphoscoliosis Correction’ on the young patient during a 4-hour-long surgery recently. The child started walking on the next day of the surgery and was discharged without a brace after three days. He has recovered completely and is leading a normal life today.

In another case, a 14-year-old boy based in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, was born with ‘Congenital Kyphosis’ of the spine wherein the child’s spinal column had not developed properly in the womb. Dr Joshi conducted ‘Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy (PSO)’ on the patient, which corrected the deformed spine. The child was able to walk on the next day and discharged on the third day.

Discussing the cases, Dr Joshi, said, “Kyphosis and Scoliosis are quite rare and underdiagnosed disorders of the spine. A delay in treatment can deform the spine, thereby affecting the child’s heart and lung function. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can go a long way to prevent such complications. A minor deformity can be treated with a brace, while a larger one requires surgical correction. All these surgeries are performed in a world-class manner available only at select hospitals such as Fortis Hospital Mohali.”
