Mother & wife of 35yr old donate kin’s organs to enable Heart Transplant on a Mumbaikar at Fortis Hospital, Mulund

Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund have today conducted a life-saving heart transplant on a 11yr old boy suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy; only enabled because the mother and wife of a young 35yr old collectively consented to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead. The recipient is a school-going boy from Andheri, Mumbai who was wait-listed over a month ago.

The 35yr old donor, hailing from Dharampuri, Indore, was declared brain dead at Bombay Hospital, Indore, following a road traffic accident in which he sustained a severe brain injury. Survived by his parents, wife (who is 5 months pregnant), 9yr old daughter and two brothers; his mother and wife boldly consented to donate his organs upon being counselled. Teams from Muskaan Trust and Indore Society for Organ Donation counselled the family. Under the guidance of Hon. Sanjay Dubey, IAS, Commissioner – Indore, an elaborate plan was quickly laid down to ensure smooth transportation of organs. With the consent from ZTCC, SOTTO, ROTTO and NOTTO already in place, the harvesting team led by Dr Satish Jawali, Cardio Vascular Thoracic Surgeon (CTVS) in Fortis Hospital, Mulund rushed to retrieve the Heart for the young recipient.

With coordination and cooperation from multiple key stakeholders and civic authorities, the live Heart was transferred out of Bombay Hospital, Indore at 08:10AM transported in an ambulance to reach Indore Airport at 08:27AM, thereby being transferred into a commercial flight that took off at 08:38AM, landing at Mumbai Airport at 09:34AM. The Ambulance carrying the organ and the Retrieval Team left the airport to reach Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 10:05AM; covering 547Kms in 01Hr 55Mins into the waiting hands of conducting surgeon Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, at the hospital.

Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, talking about the clinical feat of having conducted four life-saving transplants in the past 72hrs, said, “We are extremely proud of our Clinicians, Medical Social Workers and Nursing teams who’ve worked round-the-clock for the past few days to enable these transplants. Donor family and Donor Maintenance Teams across hospitals have made this feat possible. At this pace, we believe that we are rapidly progressing towards a healthier tomorrow”. Conducting surgeon, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, upon conclusion of the surgery said, “We have successfully concluded the surgery on our little recipient; he’s been moved to the PICU and will be under close observation. I am happy that the two mothers donated for the cause that saved another child”.
