Over 1,170 Gallbladder Stones removed from 36-year-old Woman at Fortis Escorts Faridabad

Faridabad, 16 October 2024: Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad in a remarkable medical achievement successfully performed a surgery and extracted over 1,170 stones from the gall bladder of a 36-year-old woman, suffering from severe abdominal pain. The team of doctors led by Dr BD Pathak, Director, General Surgery, Fortis Escorts Faridabad conducted the surgery, and the patient was discharged the following day in stable condition.

Upon admission to the hospital, the patient was suffering from intense abdominal pain that had persisted for the past 2-3 days.  Diagnostic tests, including an ultrasound revealed the presence of multiple gall bladder stones. A few stones had passed into the common bile duct causing pancreatitis. The doctors initially performed an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to extract the stones from the common bile duct, followed by a single-incision laparoscopic surgery to remove the remaining stones from the gallbladder.

Had the patient been not treated on time, the stones would have led to complications such as jaundice, inflamed pancreas and Gallbladder perforation, -a rare but potentially fatal complication of acute Cholecystitis, a condition that causes the gallbladder to become inflamed, swollen and red.
