Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Conduct Mumbai’s 6th Paediatric Heart Transplant
Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund conducted Mumbai’s 6th Paediatric Heart Transplant today, to save a 10yr old male suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The donor was a 21yr old male who succumbed to injuries suffered during a road traffic accident and was subsequently declared brain dead. Marking Mumbai’s 36th heart transplant, the transplant surgery saved and enriched life of a boy from Aurangabad who was waitlisted since the past five months. The surgery was successfully conducted by Dr Vijay Agarwal, Head of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
The donor from Badlapur, Mumbai, died few years after his elder brother met with a similar fate, on the same date. However, the courageous family consented to donate Heart, Liver, Kidneys, Skin and Corneas of their kin. Other organs are transported to other deserving candidates off the organ waitlist across the city. The cardiac transplant team of Fortis Hospital, Mulund harvested the Heart. It was transported from Jupiter Hospital, Thane at 02:12 PM, reaching Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 02:22 PM covering a distance of 9 kms in 10 minutes. The preserved heart was immediately moved to the Operation Theatre where team of doctors led by Dr Vijay Agarwal, Head of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully transplanted the heart.
Dr Vijay Agarwal, Head of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “Our Medical Social Workers have put in tremendous effort to find the right organ match in terms of blood group and size. The surgery has been successfully completed and our young patient is stable. We will keep him under observation for the next 48 to 72 hours. A special word of thanks to the parents of the donor who, in this moment of grief, have been selfless and enabled another young child to be able to live a full life.”

We are grateful to the family who in this hour of inconsolable loss decided to donate their beloveds’ organs to enrich lives of others.
