Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully conduct Mumbai’s 46th Heart Transplant on a 27yr old Ukrainian National

 In Mumbai’s 46th Heart Transplant, surgeons from Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully transplanted donor heart of a 22yr old male, to save the life of a 27yr old female, a Ukrainian national, today. The harvested heart, received from a cadaveric donation that took place at Unity Hospital, Surat, was transported in 1hr 32mins covering a distance of 317kms, in a charter flight. The retrieval and transplant surgery was conducted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, and his team comprising of Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, CVTS Surgeon. The recipient, a housewife from Ukraine was suffering from Post-partum Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had been waitlisted since the past two days. Post-partum Dilated Cardiomyopathy is an uncommon form of heart failure that happens during the last month of pregnancy or up to five months after giving birth. The disorder carries a high mortality rate.

The cadaveric donation at Unity Hospital, Surat, became possible when a 22yr old male from Surat was declared brain dead following a road traffic accident. Founder and President of NGO Donate Life Nilesh Mandlewala counseled the family of the patient; the patient’s father agreed to donate his Heart, Liver, Pancreas, Corneas and Kidneys. With the consent in place, the retrieval process started and the harvested heart began its journey from Unit Hospital, Surat, at 09.30AM and reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 11.32AM.

Speaking at the juncture, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The donor family’s contribution to the waitlisted patients is unmatched; they’ve saved and enriched lives of 7 recipients through their young son.” About the patient he said, “The surgery has been concluded and the recipient is now stable. We will continue to monitor her in the ICU for the next 48 to 72 hours.

Talking about the landmark surgery, Dr S. Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “This achievement is fruition of efforts put in by all stakeholders who worked in tandem to breathe new life into our and 6 other deserving patients. We extend our humble appreciation to the donor family; it is because of them that our clinicians have managed to save this young lady”.

Swift coordination between Surat’s Traffic & Police and Mumbai’s Traffic & Police Authorities helped enable smooth organ transfer. The harvested heart was transferred out of Unity Hospital, Surat at 09.30AM and transferred into a charter flight that was on stand-by, which took off at 09.57AM; landing in Mumbai at 10.30AM. The ambulance reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 11.32PM covering a distance of 317KMS in 01hr 32mins.
