Surgeons at Fortis Mulund, Give a Primary School Teacher a New lease of life in Mumbai’s 37th Heart Transplant
Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully transplanted a donor heart into a 27yr old male recipient, in 8th efficacious interstate heart transplant from Gujarat to Maharashtra. The harvested organ was transferred within 1hr 40mins, covering a distance of 587kms, to Mumbai for the surgery conducted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
The recipient from Kolhapur was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy for over 3 years and was waitlisted for the transplant for over two weeks. The surgery became possible as a 27yr old male who had sustained a head injury due to a road traffic accident, was declared Brain Dead at Bajrangdas Bapa Arogya Dham Hospital, Bhavnagar. Upon being counseled by the hospital staff, the patient’s kin consented to donate his Heart, Liver, Kidneys and Corneas. After the successful surgery, Dr Anvay Mulay said, “We salute all the courageous families who’ve helped save and enrich lives of much deserving wait-listed patients. The surgery was successful, the patient is now recuperating in the ICU.”
Talking about the successful surgery, Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “We are heartened to witness boost in organ donation, not just within the state but beyond state lines. Initiatives to drive awareness about the cause have made much needed impact. We are indebted to the donor family and thankful to all stakeholders who enabled our clinicians to conduct this procedure.”
Airport and Traffic Authorities of both the cities swiftly laid the Green Corridor between Bhavnagar and Mumbai; with the help of the roadmap and the flight map, the donor heart left Bajrangdas Bapa Arogya Dham Hospital at 08.12PM reaching airport at 08.27PM. The preserved heart was transferred into a chartered flight that took off at 08.35PM, landing at Mumbai Airport at 09.26PM. The ambulance carrying the donor heart reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 09.51PM and subsequently into the OT.
