Fortis Mohali holds awareness talk for Parkinson’s Patients
Mohali, April 12, 2024: Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder, which causes tremors, falls and slow movements. To recognise the warning signs of Parkinson’s, and to highlight the importance of diet and timing of medicine to manage the disease effectively, Department of Neurology at Fortis Hospital Mohali organised a awareness talk for Parkinson patients.
Experts from Fortis Mohali including Dr Sudesh Prabhakar, Director, Neurology, Dr Nishit Sawal, Consultant - Neurology and Dr Shivani Juneja, Consultant, Clinical pharmacology emphasised early detection which can help improve the quality of life for Parkinson’s patients. The treatment options include medications, diet based therapies, and deep brain stimulation.
Dr Sudesh Prabhakar said, “Millet based diets improve absorption of medicines used for Parkinson’s leading to control of disease and for this Fortis Hospital Mohali is offering millet-based diet therapy.Fortis Mohali offers cutting edge Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and specialised diet based therapies for Parkinson disease patients. Deep-brain stimulation involves implanting electrodes inside the brain to produce electrical impulses. The surgery helps improve motor complications in patients with Parkinson’s disease which are not responding to medicines. Dr Nishit Sawal explained that the absorption of L-dopa, the main drug for Parkinson’s increases many fold if given via LCAS formulation (Liquid carbidopa ascorbic acid solution (LCAS ). This is useful, especially in advanced disease when the effect of tablets decreases and stay for a lesser time.
