5-year-old boy with brain haemorrhage successfully treated at Fortis Hospital Noida

Jun 11, 2024 to Jun 11, 2024

Doctors at Fortis Hospital Noida successfully treated a 5-year-old boy who had brain hemorrhage, post he experienced sudden onset of headache and vomiting while playing in his school. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in his hometown - Rajasthan’s Pilani, where he underwent a CT scan of the brain and wassubsequently referred to Fortis Noida as the surgery for the detected brain lesion is performed only in selected hospitals in India.

When the patient was brought to the hospital, he was very sleepy and lethargic. A CT scan was conducted which revealed brain haemorrhage on one side of the brain. To check for abnormalities in the blood flow, doctors performed cerebral DSA (digital subtraction angiography) on him which revealed a complex bunch of abnormal blood vessels (Arteriovenus malformation) entangled together in the frontal part of the brain. His treatment began under the team of doctors led by Dr Rahul Gupta, Director, Neurosurgery, Fortis Noida and he was discharged in 5 days in a stable condition.

Giving details of the case, Dr Rahul Gupta, Director, Neurosurgery, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “We found Arteriovenus malformation (AVM) in the patient’s brain – a tangle of blood vessels that create irregular connections between arteries and veins in the brain. Hence, we decided to operate and remove the bunch of abnormal vessels and evaluate hematoma. The surgery in this case was complicated as these abnormal blood vessels are very fragile and rupture on touching them. With the help of trained neuro-anesthetists, we could control his blood pressure and focus on the surgery. After a 6-hour-long surgery, he was shifted to Paediatric ICU for post-operative care. The frontal lobe of the brain is important for voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level of executive functions. Had the surgery not been performed timely, he could have developed vision loss, limb weakness, sudden death or coma like state. The patient was discharged in a span of 5 days and is doing fine now.

Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “It was a challenging case considering the age and complexity of the patient. In such cases, it is very important to consult a multi-specialty hospital which is well equipped with best medical facilities, medical devices and well-trained doctors. The team of doctors led by Dr Rahul Gupta meticulously handled the case and executed the surgery with great precision, care and a multi-disciplinary approach alongwith the anesthesia team.”
