6-Cms Tennis Ball Sized Cancerous Tumour removed from 55-year-old-Man’s Kidney via robot aided surgery at Fortis Hospital Noida
Doctors at Fortis Hospital Noida, successfully removed a tennis ball-sized, 6 cm cancerous tumour from the kidney of a 55-year-old man via Robot-aided Surgery. The team of doctors led by Dr Shailendra Kumar Goel, Director – Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida conducted the challenging surgery in just 30 minutes. Preventive health checkup and early diagnosis played a crucial role in treatment of the patient.
The patient, an Indian Based in Dubai, had come to India on vacation and underwent a preventive health check-up. His ultrasound and CT scan reports revealed that the patient had stage 1 cancerous tumor in his right kidney, which required immediate surgical intervention. Without timely surgery, the cancer would have spread to other body parts leading to a life-threatening condition. The team of doctors, thus decided to perform Robotic Partial Nephrectomy - a procedure which involves the removal of cancerous growth alongwith the preservation of the healthy part of the kidney. Performing the surgery with the help of robotic assistance provides maximum precision and reduced surgical time, with quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay, and minimal blood loss.
Giving details of the case, Dr Shailendra Kumar Goel, Director – Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “This case had multiple risk factors as the patient was suffering from multiple co-morbidities - he was obese (90 kgs), had uncontrolled diabetes (HBA1C 11.2), increased levels of creatinine (1.8). Prior to proceeding with the surgery, we had to control his diabetes through insulin and other medicines. Apart from these factors, he was on a regular dose of blood thinners as a precautionary measure due to diabetes, hypertension and obesity. The surgery involved clamping of the renal artery to block blood supply to the kidney, so we had a very limited time of only 30 minutes to remove the tumor and precisely repair the kidney tissue as well as urinary tract so that urine doesn’t leak. If the renal artery is clamped for longer duration, the function of the remaining kidney would have been compromised.”
Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Noida said, “This particular case is a testimony to the fact that lays emphasis on early detection and regular health check-ups. The case was challenging considering the patient’s already pre-existing co-morbidities and limited time to complete the surgery. Despite the challenges, the surgery was successfully conducted by our doctors with the help of Da Vinci Xi robot. Clinical expertise and best-in-class technology are the hallmarks of Fortis Hospital Noida, and we continuously endeavor to provide best possible treatments to save lives and best clinical outcomes. improved outcomes.”
