Epitome of love: Daughter, Son donate kidney to mothers suffering from Chronic Kidney Ailments
What can be a better gift to a mother than the gift of life! Braving all odds and fears, a daughter donated one of her kidneys to her mother, who was battling chronic kidney disease. The 49-year-old mother was diagnosed after experiencing recurrent vomiting, poor appetite, and insomnia. She also became extremely weak and suffered from malnutrition. Although she initially started dialysis, her malnutrition hindered her progress. The family was counselled about a transplant, but they had concerns about whether she would be able to tolerate the surgery. In this challenging hour, the woman's 28-year-old daughter courageously stepped forward to donate her kidney. After the transplant, the mother recovered and now leads a healthy life.
In another act of sacrifice and love, a 21-year-old son donated one of his kidneys to his 45-year-old mother who was suffering from irreversible advanced kidney disease. Doctors recommended dialysis and a kidney transplant, but the only family member with a compatible blood type was her young son. Initially, the mother was hesitant to accept his kidney because he was still studying and so young.
The patient was advised for dialysis and kidney transplant and her matching blood group was not available in the family except her young son. But, the woman wasn't willing to take the kidney from her son as he was studying and was young. But her son was resilient not to leave her mother on dialysis, when a transplant could offer her a renewed life. He donated one of his kidneys to his mother and gave her a new lease of life.
Taking about the two cases, Dr Anuja Porwal, Additional Director, Nephrology, Fortis Hospital Noida said, “Both the daughter and the son showed immense courage during the hour of crisis by coming forward to donate their kidneys for their mother. What can be a greater gift to a mother than the gift of life! We hope these heartwarming gestures inspire more people to come forward for organ donation and make a difference in a lot of lives. We salute these younger generations and are grateful to them for understanding the value of organ donation and giving lives to those in need.”Top of Form
It is estimated that almost 5 lakh Indians face organ failure every year and only 2-3 percent receive a life-saving transplant. Every year, hundreds of people die in India, waiting for an organ transplant. Due to lack of awareness and misconceptions, there is a shortage of organ donors, and with each passing year, the gap between the number of organs donated and the people waiting for transplant, is growing wider. Timely cadaveric organ donation can save many lives and more people would come forth and pledge their organs if they receive more information and are educated on the benefits of organ donation.
