- A 31-year-old female foreign patient successfully underwent Plaque Brachytherapy to treat her eye cancer at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram. The patient, suffering from a challenging choroidal melanoma affecting her eye, was treated using an indigenously produced Plaque (Ruthenium 106) made by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, which is available at a fraction of the cost compared to the imported one.The plaque insertion was done on November 3, 2023, by Dr Anita Sethi, Director & HOD - Ophthalmology, assisted by Dr Neeraj Sanduja, Senior Consultant - Ophthalmology, with support from Dr Amal Roy Choudhary, Director - Radiation Oncology and the Radiation Oncology Team. “The case was challenging as the tumour was very close to the Optic Nerve and we needed to limit the radiation dose to protect the Optic Nerve and other sensitive tissue,” said Dr Sethi.
