Pain in Back Side of Head

Back Head Pain

Back-head pain refers to pain that is felt in the back of the head. This type of pain can have a variety of causes, including tension headaches, migraines, injury, or certain medical conditions such as a brain tumour or meningitis.

Back head pain reason

Many potential causes of headaches include,

  1. Concussion
  2. Neck problems
  3. Herniated disc

Back-of-the-head pain can also be caused by problems such as muscle strain, cervical spondylosis, a herniated disc, or a pinched nerve. Other causes of back-of-the-head pain include injuries, such as a blow to the head, or medical conditions, such as meningitis or a brain tumor.

Types of backhead pain

Pain in the back side of the head can be of multiple types, like:

1. Tension headaches

These are the most common types of headache, characterized by a dull, aching pain or pressure that is often felt on both sides of the head, including the back of the head.

2. Migraines

Migraines are characterized by severe, throbbing pain that is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. This pain can be felt on one side, or both sides of the head, including the back of the head.

3. Cluster headaches

Cluster headaches are characterized by severe, sharp pain on one side of the head, including the back of the head. They are often accompanied by other symptoms such as redness and watering of the eye, and a runny or stuffy nose on the same side as the pain.

4. Cervicogenic headaches

These headaches are caused by problems in the neck, such as muscle strain, cervical spondylosis, a herniated disc, or a pinched nerve. The pain is typically felt in the back of the head and neck.

5. Traction headaches

This type of headache is caused by the pulling or stretching of the muscles and blood vessels in the head and neck. It is often caused by poor posture, or from spending a long time in one position.

Symptoms of back head pain

Here are some of the common symptoms of back head pain other than the pain in the back side of the head:

  1. Dull, aching pain or pressure may be felt on both sides of the head, including the back of the head.
  2. Sensitivity to light and sound, as well as nausea and vomiting.
  3. Severe throbbing pain along with other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.
  4. Sharp pain on one side of the head, including the back of the head, may be accompanied by other symptoms like watering and redness of the eye, and a stuffy nose on the same side as the pain.
  5. Pain in the back of the head and neck may travel to the shoulders and arms, sometimes accompanied by neck stiffness and difficulty moving the head.
  6. Tenderness or tightness in the muscles at the base of the skull and the back of the head

Treatment of back head pain

If the back head pain doesn’t go away on its own in some time then here are a few treatments for quick relief and as a long-term solution:

1. Over-the-counter pain medications

These include ibuprofen, aspirin, and acetaminophen, which can help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with headaches.

2. Prescription medications

If over-the-counter medications are not effective, a doctor may prescribe stronger pain medications or other types of medications specifically designed to treat migraines or other types of headaches.

3. Physical therapy

A physical therapist can teach exercises and stretches to help alleviate muscle tension and pain in the head and neck.

4. Relaxation technique

Techniques such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help reduce stress and tension, which can contribute to headaches.

5. Acupuncture or massage

These alternative therapies can help to relieve muscle tension and pain in the head and neck.

6. Surgery

In rare cases, if a structural problem in the neck like a herniated disc causes the pain, surgery may be needed.

It's important to address risk factors such as poor posture, stress, and lack of sleep, which can contribute to headaches and neck pain.

When to consult a doctor?

  1. It is important to consult a doctor if your headache:
  2. is the worst headache you have ever had
  3. is accompanied by a fever, neck stiffness, confusion, seizure, double vision, weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking
  4. is associated with a head injury
  5. is accompanied by a stiff neck and/or a rash
  6. wakes you up at night

Additionally, if you have a history of headaches and your headaches have recently become more frequent or severe, it's a good idea to see a doctor to rule out any underlying conditions. A doctor can help determine the cause of your headaches and recommend the appropriate treatment.

To summarize, it's important to see a doctor if you are experiencing frequent, severe, or unusual headaches, or if you have any other symptoms that concern you. A proper diagnosis is important for proper treatment, and a neurologist can help determine the cause of your headaches and recommend the appropriate treatment.
